I plan to do a “Currently…” post every other week, although the exact day has yet to be determined. The idea came from Katy Upperman, author of KISSING MAX HOLDEN (out in 2017), and also a former ballet mom I sat next beside for a year. At the time neither of us knew the other was a writer until we ran into each other at an author’s event much later, which was disappointing on many levels because we could have been talking books while watching our preschoolers dance. Regardless, she’s fabulous and you should visit her post here.
Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. I’m really enjoying this contemporary YA about Samantha, a girl who wakes up each morning and appears to relive her last day, following her death in a car accident. I love Lauren Oliver’s voice and characters, which are reminiscent of “Mean Girls”. I’m hoping Samantha is in some kind of transient coma or dreamlike state as her character continues to evolve, make amends, and discover what she really wants.
Still Thinking About
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. Okay, so I typically read YA because that’s the genre I write. However, my aunt recommended this book to me and as I loved Kristin Hannah’s Winter Garden, I knew I’d like this book about two sisters who become part of the Resistance in Nazi Occupied France. I could not put it down and am still thinking about it. Seriously, read it.
My new living room furniture. Mostly, however, I’m loving this painting that now hangs above my fireplace mantel. The moment I saw it in the store, I knew I had to find furniture to match it.
Baseball season! Specifically, the Mariners. I love football and I love baseball. Aside from March Madness, this time of year, is so dreary when it comes to sports. I can’t wait to hang out at Safeco Field with my family, have a gluten-free hot dog (from a stand on the lower level, near the Hall of Fame) and a glass of wine. It’s my most favorite time of year.
Completing my Master’s degree in Education. Although it only took two years (only!), I feel that I aged ten and I’m still exhausted. I can’t even describe the level of stress I carried around with me every day for 24 long months. All I can say is…I. Am. Done. Also, it’s a degree that no one can ever take away from me (Insert PSA as to not deter my own children from completing their education). Really though, no one can take it away. It’s all mine.
The Walking Dead. At least I will be tonight! I’m so excited it’s back. I’m also eagerly awaiting Game of Thrones (Jon Snow better be alive, y’all) and Orange is the New Black. As far as movies, I really enjoyed The Intern, with Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro.
I’m in that beginning stage of a new contemporary young adult novel. It’s difficult to describe, but it’s kind of a place I go to when I’m learning about my characters, their voices, and the conflicts they will face. Essentially, I’m developing relationships with my new imaginary friends, or as my 3rd grader and her friends would say BFFNMW. In case you’re wondering, that means Best Friends Forever No Matter What. I can’t really tell you much about my new “friends” because they’re currently in my head, but here’s a picture that I’m using for inspiration.
Making me Happy
My family and the fact that spring is coming, evidenced by longer days and beautiful sunsets. Leave a comment if you’ve also posted a “Currently…” blog so I can stop by and read!
