If you’ve watched the movie “Ten Things I Hate About You” you’ll recognize this picture. The movie depicted this high school as being in Seattle, with a sweeping view of the skyline, including the Space Needle, but that’s not geographically correct. This school is actually Stadium High School, and it’s located in Tacoma. Those bleachers, consequently, are also the site of my own personal hell. Or they were when I occasionally made the drive to run them with friends. I took this picture with shaking arms at the end of an exhausting, but oddly exhilarating, workout.
The bleachers themselves are as steep as they look. When you reach the top it’s as if your lung are on fire and about to burst out of your chest, if you’re able to breathe at all. Don’t even get me started on how your quads tighten up and your glutes burn, and how you might not be able to walk the next day. Did I mention that the stadium is usually locked and that even to subject yourself to this pain requires scaling the fence to get in? That’s called the warm-up, apparently. And also the reason why it’s totally fun.
In case you’re wondering, it’s also the inspiration behind a little something I’m working on.
